For team leaders, comprehensive knowledge of the theory of Lean Six Sigma and it’s practical implementation is essential.
To master the methodologies of Lean Six Sigma, consider participating in Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification Training delivered by pdtraining in Los Angeles, Atlanta and other cities in the U.S.
Lean Six Sigma is a process improvement methodology that uses the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC) phases to optimize processes by eliminating errors and minimizing variability. The DMAIC is the basic tool used in Six Sigma projects.
Define
The define phase of Lean Six Sigma identifies problems in processes, determines the goal of a Six Sigma project, establish responsibilities for the implementation of a Lean Six Sigma project, and determines which project must be selected for the implementation of Lean Six Sigma, and so on. Essentially, this phase involves defining the scope of a project, the delegation of duties, the goal of the project, and the time duration during which the project must be completed.
This phase involves planning and defining roles, and thus, is one of the most important phases of Lean Six Sigma.
Measure
This phase involves the collecting data to measure processes. For process discovery, various methods are used such as a fishbone diagram, a process map, an X-Y diagram, and so on. A step-by-step measurement system analysis is conducted to check repeatability, accuracy, reproducibility, calibration, etc. The measure phase also determines the process capability by creating an estimation of continuous data and attribute data.
The measure phase helps to determine the various components of variation to allow corrections to be made to optimize the process.
Analyze
In the analyze phase of Lean Six Sigma, defects are identified and the root cause of problems are eliminated to increase the productivity of processes. Various methods to analyze root causes of problems are used such as a fish diagram. If needed, complex tools for analysis are also used, including hypothesis testing and inferential statistics.
The problems that need to be corrected in the next phase of Improve are selected during the analyze phase.
Improve
In this phase, solutions to the problem identified and analyzed under the previous phases is conducted. Process modeling and experimental methods of eliminating defects is carried out to minimize or remove the impact of a defect. This phase determines whether the errors identified are corrected or not, and to what extent a process is improved.
The Improve phase is the implementation phase where solutions are tested, any risks after the implementation are considered, detailed implementation plans are made, and the actual implementation of the plan is carried out.
Control
This last phase of the DMAIC involves maintaining what has been achieved under the Improve phase. Tools such as capability analysis, defect prevention and control, and statistical process control (SPC) are used to control processes. This phase ensures that the results achieved under the Improve phase are maintained by consistently removing defects, and aligning systems and structures.
